Yellow Dog UK is a charity with a basic message to highlight the fact that many dogs want their space, whether due to supporting disabled people, operations, age or shyness or many other reasons. If you see a dog with a yellow dog lead, coat or ribbon, this is the sign to keep your distance and let yellow dogs and owners enjoy their walk and space without any problems.
This can relate importantly to people with disabilities too. If their dogs are clearly wearing their ‘Yellow Dog’ leads, harnesses or bandanas along with their owner’s vests, people should be aware not to allow their dogs to race up and jump, say hello and shock both owner and dog, especially important for the blind or partially sighted. It is not only dogs who maybe don’t want that unexpected cuddle but owners too!
Support dogs can bring to the disabled community
The power and importance of dogs in the world of those with disabilities is clear and obvious to all of us who take time to think about it, whether this is guide dogs for people with sight loss or even therapy dogs who help those with mental health issues.
The regular news reports telling us how valuable dogs can be in helping those struggling with disabilities are so important when sharing this message, with many working dogs having legal rights in the workplace and other public areas.
There are also other areas that may not always be considered but are also key elements in the happiness of those with disabilities and their dogs, such as helping others to recognise and understand the situation.
Yellow is the colour for dogs and people that need space
Believe it or not, not every dog wants attention. Some dogs are in training, some dogs have health issues or are recovering from surgery, some dogs are rescues being rehabilitated or have suffered a bad experience, nervous dogs, or older, fragile dogs that find the world a scary place, through no fault of their own.
These are the dogs the Yellow Dog charity wants to help with this important campaign and instantly recognisable branding. The charity is sharing this message across our dog-loving nation so that all dogs and owners – the shy, the old, the injured, the timid – can enjoy their walks too by being aware that if you see a dog with its smart yellow bandana, jacket or lead on, you give them space.
Yellow Dog is an international campaign creating awareness for dogs that need space. Launched in 2012 in Sweden by Eva Oliversson, a certified dog trainer and dog behaviourist, Yellow Dog hopes that both adults and children alike will learn that it is always respectful and important to ask before approaching or stroking a dog. This then becomes a good lifelong habit that works well for both animals and humans.
As the issue is not about aggressive dogs, any and all aggressive dogs must wear a muzzle. But the charity is a tool to help with training or socialising dogs and responsible dog owners.
Alison Gibson-Stark is the UK ambassador for Yellow Dog having had Yellow Dogs herself. She passionately believes in the Yellow Dog campaign and what it can achieve for these dogs and their owner’s quality of life by educating everyone in the UK, that Yellow Dogs need space.

The Crip Life™ advertising strategy is “Pay What You Can (PWYC).” We know this is very different to most if not all, online magazines. PWYC is a business model that doesn’t insist upon set prices for its goods or services. Instead, it asks clients to pay what they feel the product or service is worth. We have taken this one step further by adding what you can afford to pay.
We want to place adverts for a wide range of clients. So, whatever the size of the organisation, if you want to share a personal story with our readers or promote a product or service, contact Joanna Baker-Rogers.
