Accessible travel can be life-changing for people with disabilities, yet it is often overlooked during rehabilitation and care planning. At The Care & Occupational Therapy Show, discover how Abletoholiday with LanzAbility helps remove travel barriers, build confidence and create new opportunities for independence, wellbeing and meaningful participation in life.

Occupational therapists, case managers, care home owners and nursing home staff play an important role in helping people live as independently and safely as possible. They assess individual needs, identify barriers to daily living and recommend practical solutions such as home adaptations, mobility aids, rehabilitation programmes and support services.

Yet one area that is often overlooked is accessible travel.

For many people with disabilities, independence isn’t just about being able to get around the house. It’s about having the confidence and freedom to visit family, take a holiday, explore new places and participate fully in life.

Unfortunately, travel can present a unique set of challenges. Concerns about accessible accommodation, airport assistance, adapted transport, mobility equipment and local support can quickly turn an exciting idea into something that feels overwhelming. For some people, the barriers aren’t only physical. Anxiety, fear of flying, autism, ADHD, trauma or a loss of confidence following illness or injury can make travelling feel impossible.

Accessible travel beyond the home

Adapted camel riding, surfing and paragliding via LanzAbility in Lanzarote

On 23rd June 2026, three complementary businesses will come together under the banner of Abletoholiday with LanzAbility at Stand 57 at The Care & Occupational Therapy Show in Exeter to showcase a range of accessible travel solutions.

The collaboration brings together LanzAbility, specialists in accessible holidays and adapted experiences in Lanzarote. At the stand, you’ll meet Hazel Bergin, an experienced provider of adapted accommodation and accessible holidays in the Algarve, Portugal, and Steve Woods, an internationally respected hypnotist and trauma specialist who helps people overcome anxiety, confidence issues and other challenges that can limit independence and participation.

LanzAbility’s services in Lanzarote can include:

  • Fully adapted accommodation
  • Airport transfers and meet-and-greet services
  • Wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs)
  • Access to mobility and disability equipment
  • Adapted experiences across the island and at sea
  • Tailor-made holiday planning
  • Local knowledge and support throughout the stay

By focusing on ability, not disability, LanzAbility goes beyond simply providing accessible accommodation and transfers, creating once-in-a-lifetime holidays that can include unique adapted experiences such as private island tours, camel feeding, wine tasting, paragliding and even surfing.

Also joining them will be Bridget Gardner, a wheelchair user and independent travel agent, who brings valuable lived experience of travelling with a disability and the challenges that many disabled travellers face.

Together, they offer a unique combination of accessible accommodation, adapted travel experiences and therapeutic support designed to help remove barriers to travel.

One of the initiatives visitors can learn more about at Stand 57 is the new Multi-Therapeutic Retreat Programme, developed through the collaboration between LanzAbility, Hazel Bergin and Steve Woods.

Taking place in the Algarve and Lanzarote, the retreats combine adapted accommodation, accessible experiences and confidence-building support.

Guests can enjoy adapted beaches, accessible excursions and group activities, while also having access to one-to-one or group sessions designed to help overcome challenges such as travel anxiety, fear of flying and loss of confidence.

The programme demonstrates how accessible accommodation, practical support and therapeutic services can work together to help people travel with greater confidence, autonomy and peace of mind.
