This is a spontaneous Christmas poem – Christmas is a time for… – which our editor Emma Purcell wrote back in 2022, to show the festive season can be fun for some people but hard for others, particularly those living with disabilities and long-term health conditions.
Christmas is a time for…
Christmas is a time for fun and enjoyment, love and laughter
However, for other people, it can feel lonely, isolating, sad, worrying and stressful
Resting, relaxing and recuperating is ideal this time of year
Indulging in food, drink and festive films
Singing along to a bit of Mariah, Noddy and Wham!
Testing the family’s knowledge with trivial pursuits, scrabble, charades and other games
Make a love one smile with that perfect gift
And yet many of us are facing pain, grief, illness and life difficulties
So, this Christmas, appreciate what you have and who you’re with while also thinking of those we’ve lost and who are finding it tough during the holiday season.
A gentle message for the season
As we reach the end of the year, we hope you find a moment of comfort, connection or calm – whatever this season means to you. Whether you celebrate Christmas, mark a different tradition, or simply see this as another point in the year, may the coming days bring you peace, safety and a little light where you need it most.
For anyone finding this time difficult, please remember you’re not alone. Reach out to someone you trust, or contact support services such as Samaritans (116 123), SHOUT (text 85258) or other local helplines if you need someone to talk to. It’s perfectly okay to seek rest, set boundaries and prioritise your wellbeing.
Wishing everyone a gentle, safe and hopeful end to the year – and may the season, in whatever form it takes for you, offer moments of kindness and care.
